MHP Orthotics and Prosthetics Department offers the newest advancements in technology combined with friendly, knowledgeable staff in a confidential, personable environment. Services provided can be categorized into these main groups: orthotics, diabetic foot care, prosthetics, post mastectomy care, and compression garments.

The mission of our department is to provide prompt, professional service to patients for Mercy Health Partners, nursing homes and the community. Patients are seen by physician referral only; requiring a prescription for evaluation and treatment. An interdisciplinary approach involving the patient, patient’s physician, therapist(s), caregiver(s) and American Board Certified practitioner(s) assure the best outcome in quality care.

Department hours of operation are Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5: 30 p.m. Practitioners are available for emergency needs 24 hours a day. Most insurances are accepted for services. Please call (231) 672-4886 or 1.800.368.4125 and request the Orthotics and Prosthetics Department to schedule appointments and request information.

We are located on the Mercy Campus at 1560 E. Sherman Blvd., Suite, 125, Muskegon, MI 49444.

Orthotics

Mercy Health Partners Orthotics provides a wide variety of services.  You can choose from custom made off-the-shelf products that can be inserted into your shoes.  When choosing custom made orthotics, an impression is made of the foot and is manually formed to the curve of your foot to insure a proper fit.  Orthotics are designed to decrease abnormal motion of the foot while allowing for normal movement.  Orthotics realign your feet to a more “normal” or “neutral” position, restore balance, improve sports performance, and service to eliminate or reduce foot, back and leg pain by improving function and efficiency. Our othotic services include:

  • Cervical
  • Diabetic shoes and inserts
  • Spinal
  • Upper and lower extremity

Diabetic Foot Care

We offer thorough and effective treatments for patients suffering from diabetic related foot and circulatory problems. Using specialized techniques we provide sandals, shoes, inserts, prosthetic toe fillers and bracing options for weight bearing and non-weight bearing patients. Diabetic shoes and braces are an effective treatment option, removing weight from an ulcer area, while evenly distributing pressure on the entire sole of the foot. These devices are lightweight and can be custom fabricated and/or modified to meet patient weight, gait, and diabetic needs. Additionally, these devices can be adjusted throughout the healing process to increase effectiveness and patient mobility.

Please note: Not all diabetics are eligible for this type of treatment.

Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Bill

In many cases, therapeutic shoes are covered by insurance. Specifically, Medicare patients are eligible for therapeutic shoes under the Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Bill. This Bill states that Medicare patients suffering from Diabetes Mellitus and one or more of the following associated diabetic problems, qualify for one pair of therapeutic shoes and three pair of multi-density inserts per calendar year:

  • History of foot amputation, partial or complete.
  • History of previous foot ulceration.
  • History of pre-ulcerative callus.
  • Peripheral neuropathy and callus formation.
  • Foot deformity.
The Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Bill requires a written prescription from a podiatrist or a qualified physician. For more information on this Bill, or to see if you qualify please call (231) 672-4886.

Prosthetics

Prosthetic devices (artificial limbs) help return mobility and function to patients after amputation. At Mercy Health Partners, we provide all types of prosthetic devices, including arm and leg prostheses.

Prosthetic practitioners, in collaboration with physicians and physical therapists, provide a clinical pathway for amputee services; guiding and supporting patients through the process of physical healing, wearing and ambulating using an artificial limb. Contact often begins even before the amputation, continuing from the hospital bedside, hospital rehabilitation stay and ongoing for many years as patients’ changing needs are met.

Our prostetists have years of experience in fitting, designing and patient consultation.  They work with you for the perfect fit.  Our fitting room is equipped with a set of parallel bars for safe walking and education on using your new prosthesis.

Our practitioners are sensitive to the needs of patients and understand the emotional tolls that happen with the loss of a limb.  We are there to support you, as well as provide comfort in a nice, private setting.

Our prosthetic services include:

  • Computerized prosthetic technology
  • Upper and lower extremities
