Mercy Health Partners’ Johnson Family Center for Cancer Care Opens for Radiation Therapy Patients

Mercy Health Partners is pleased to announce the opening of Radiation Therapy Services at the Johnson Family Center for Cancer Care on May 5, 2008. The opening of this new center allows both Medical and Radiation Oncology Services to be provided at one location on the Mercy Campus of Mercy Health Partners.

“Mercy Health Partners is proud to open Johnson Family Center for Cancer Care, which houses its radiation oncology services and is partnering with Cancer and Hematology Centers of Western Michigan on medical oncology services to patients in this area”, says Roger Spoelman, President and CEO of Mercy Health Partners. “It is the vision of the Johnson Family Center for Cancer Care team to provide comprehensive, patient-centered cancer care on the lakeshore. We are experiencing a smooth transition of Oncology Services from the Hackley Campus to the Johnson Family Center for Cancer Care on the Mercy Campus for patients, families, staff and physicians. We are excited about the advanced services and outstanding quality of the staff and new facility.”

The services provided at the new Cancer Center will be in three phases. Phase one, Medical Oncology, opened April 14 with Cancer and Hematology Centers of Western Michigan providing medical oncology services. Phase two, Radiation Oncology, opens today, May 5 with Dr. Nina Johnson providing radiation oncology services. Phase three opens on June 16 when Dr. Mani Kurien joins Cancer and Hematology Centers of Western Michigan.

An accomplished physician, Dr. Nina Johnson comes to Mercy Health Partners from Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana, where she served as the Radiation Oncology Medical Director. Having graduated from Indiana University Medical School, Dr. Johnson completed her residency in radiation oncology at the University of Michigan and was an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan Medical Center. She brings extensive experience and knowledge of radiation oncology to our patients.

As the only cancer facility in the region with a Varian Trilogy Linear Accelerator, we can offer pinpoint accuracy for your radiation oncology patients. This state-of-the-art accelerator reduces radiation dose to normal, healthy tissue, thereby reducing side effects. Radiation Oncology Services provided by Dr. Johnson include:

  • Image-Guided and Intensity-modulated radiation therapy
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery
  • Body & head radiosurgery
  • Respiratory gating
  • High-dose treatments including MammoSite for breast cancer
  • Real-time prostate seed implants

The Johnson Family Center for Cancer Care will provide a comprehensive program that puts the patient at the center of their cancer care. There will be many supportive services, including imaging, a patient media center, pharmacy, laboratory, clinical psychology, social work, massage therapy, prosthetic and pain services, nutritional and dietary services, and spiritual care. The center will also offer clinical research trials so that patients will have the latest oncology therapy available.
